Beauty Isn’t Selfish

Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish and you shouldn’t feel guilty for doing things to make you feel your best self!

When I started blogging years ago one of the tips for bloggers and writers was to read as much as possible. I love to read so when I heard that would help me become a better writer, I was all in. I belong to a website that publishes blogs, and as a content consumer, I usually read several blogs a day, and traditionally they are unrelated to beauty.

However, I recently read a blog written by a self-proclaimed “Plain Jane.” She went hard for those of us that love and appreciate all things beauty. As a woman, I didn’t appreciate it, and as a beauty educator, I really didn’t appreciate it!

The words I live by and believe in are “You do you.” So, while I wouldn’t characterize myself as “low maintenance” as this blogger did, I can still respect her perspective and feelings about beauty, even if they don’t align with my feelings on the subject. I do, however, take issue with anyone trying to make other women feel bad about having a treatment or procedure or using products to make themselves feel better and more confident. So, while soap and sunscreen might do it for you, don’t make me feel like I’m “wrong” for my 7-step skincare routine.

Beauty and taking care of yourself is self-care, and self-care is something I believe every single person, no matter who or what age they are, should participate in. Self-care looks different for everyone but ensuring you have some time for yourself is important for our overall health and well-being.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, being high maintenance is NOT a bad thing! A lot of people try to make it out to be selfish, egotistical, and vain - but it’s not, in most cases. I feel that being high maintenance means having the most care and respect for yourself to do things to make you feel (and by extension, look) like your best, most confident self. In a world full of Instagram filters and photoshop everywhere you look, it’s okay to do the little things that make us feel better about ourselves.

Beauty is not only cosmetic, but it’s taking care of your health also. We all want to be in the best physical health possible, right? But it’s also important to take care of our emotional and mental health as well. So, if buying that new lip gloss, getting a treatment to conceal that scar that has bothered you since you were a kid, or even getting a facelift, is going to give you more confidence and make you feel like you can take on the world, go for it!

Don’t let anyone else put their “stuff” on you and make you feel bad or guilty for taking care of yourself to any degree. Do what makes you feel good and makes you happy!

So, going into 2022, give yourself permission to go easy on yourself. Do what makes you happy, do what makes you feel confident and feels good. Change the narrative if you feel or have been made to feel guilty or vain for taking care of yourself because someone else made you feel like it was unnecessary or frivolous. If it makes you feel any kind of positive way, do it! You do YOU in 2022!

When you come and visit The Original HMF, my goal is always to educate you and provide you with as much information as possible to help my readers make informed beauty decisions so that you can choose where it’s the most valuable for you to make your beauty investments.  It’s all about YOU! Peace, love, and cheers to being the best, most confident versions of yourselves in 2022

XX,

Jenna
