Summertime Swap

Summertime and the Living is easy… which is why I make many beauty transitions for those hot summer days!

Winter, Spring, and Fall are all basically the same to me! When you grow up in Florida, seasons aren’t really a thing unless it’s Summer. Our leaves don’t change color, there is no snow, and while spring flowers are my favorite, we tend to have blooms year-round. No complaints here!

But Summertime is a totally different story. Now for most people, they enjoy the lazy days of summer vacation during their school years, and by the time they enter the workforce every day and every season is similar.  I went from college to teaching elementary school, to having my own children, so I’ve been lucky enough to continue to enjoy a summer break.

Summer means hot weather, lots of fun in the sun, and tons of water activities in salt and chlorine. Overall, even if you don’t have kids or you don’t get summers off from work there is still a sense and feeling of freedom that comes with June, July, and August.

I like to feel free and like I can drop everything at a moment’s notice and swing on my metaphorical rope over the open water and plunge below the surface at a moment's notice - and that means changing up my beauty routine. The first thing I let go of is my favorite…. my extensions. Lash and Hair – oh my!

Honestly, the first week sucks! It’s a big transition, not so much the hair because it’s too hot and humid to do every day over the summer but the lashes are my favorite beauty indulgence and while I hate giving them up, in the summer I know that I’d be too neurotic trying to schedule fills between kid activities and travel and it’s not worth worrying about them. But I do have a solution!

Once I take my eyelash extensions off I wait a week and I get a lash lift. I always use Grande Lash Enhancing Serum for growth and retention but I really amp up the consistency before removing my lash extensions because it gives me longer stronger lashes and makes the transition easier. The lift gives me the curl that accentuates the eyes in a similar way that the extensions do, and the dark dye gives them that extra pop, and if you have light eyes/light lashes, oh mama! The difference is insanity!

So here’s a couple of swaps I make for each area of beauty:

Skin

I love my prescription retinol, but it’s not conducive to all the fun in the sun and vacations I take over the summer, so instead I swap my prescription Retinol with Circadia Revita-Cyte Complex because it provides similar results without the worry of a chemical burn that can come from a retinol and sun exposure. I also use Circadia Cyto-Comm Serum to keep my skin moisturized in the summer heat. This serum is amazing! It’s the most effective product I’ve found to keep my dry skin hydrated.

Keeping your lips smooth and protected from the sun is also really important! Brush on Block protective lip oil is a favorite as it hydrates and has an SPF of 32. I love how silky smooth and lightweight this lip oil is with a slight hint of color.

Sun protection is more important than ever when it comes to the summer season. As I’m sure you have guessed by now, I’m a huge proponent of sunscreen - always! I have several favorites like Coola Organic Sunscreen and Sun Bum Sunscreen. If you aren’t currently in the routine of applying sunscreen daily before you leave your house, now is the time, and I suggest a high SPF with longer wear time for the summer. As well as carrying brush-on block sunscreen with you at all times in the summer months.

Makeup

The heat makes makeup melt and clump and streak and… well you get the idea. That’s why I always switch out my foundation/BB/CC creams for a tinted moisturizer during the summer. Check out Coola’s  BB+ tinted moisturizer with SPF 30. It’s my favorite, it adds a little tinted coverage, SPF, organic, and all-natural.

I usually forgo my usual highlighter, bronzer, blush during the summer, but if I feel like I need a little extra contour I’ll use the Nars cream blush and Benefit’s Watt’s Up Soft Focus highlighter. I feel that it blends better with the tinted moisturizer and wears better in the hot weather and humidity.

Lipstick is always a must, not only for a little color but also for the protection it provides. I love Coola’s lip tints for moisture and SPF protection.

Of course, because I don’t have eyelash extensions, I get my lash lift a week after removing my lash extensions and I’m a little extra so waterproof 4D Silk Fiber Lash Mascara is a must, and this is my favorite! If I’m not getting in the water, I love Wet-N-Wild Lash-O-Matic Mascara + Fibers to sub in for my permanent lash extensions. This drugstore find is amazing! I used to even sell a competitor brand a million years ago with a much higher price tag, and I have to admit I like this one better!

Hair

The extensions are out, so that means blow-drying isn’t necessary! While I don’t suggest sleeping on wet hair ever, I do love a good air dry in the Summer. I’ll opt for a messy bun, cute ponytail moment, or a beautiful braid or two. But if I’m heading out the door to dinner and I don’t want to wear my hair up or dry it, I love Awapuhl Texturizing Sea Spray for the fresh from the beach look. What’s more summer vacation than some beachy waves that don’t damage your hair in the process?

Another product I love to use on not only myself but also my children is the Wow Dream Filter, it removes all the buildup in your hair - think water minerals, chlorine, and product buildup!

Also, don’t forget to protect your hair while floating in the relaxing waters! I always wet my hair with fresh water and add conditioner before taking the plunge, and with this trick, the cheap conditioner works best by coating the hair and keeping the salt and chlorine out!

You can also try the Ouai mask every once in a while, the heat will help the treatment soak in and you’ll be left with beautiful silky locks after a day at the beach! Pretty sweet, right?! I also love the Moroccan Oil Protect and Prevent Spray color protectant for when I’ll be outside in the sun but not necessarily in the water. You gotta protect that beautiful color!

Nails

I don’t usually get my nails done consistently during the summer. If I have somewhere to go or something I have to do then I make an appointment then! I feel as though the constant water, sand, and other elements of summer don’t really work with keeping my nails chip-free. I also use my Static Pop On Nails when I’m feeling the need for perfectly polished digits and don’t want to deal with the salon.

For my little piggy toes, it’s always gel pedicures during the summer. I wear flip-flops year-round, but between the sand, the water, and the open-toed shoes my nails need to last! This is a must-do investment!

So, start getting yourself Summer ready and swap your favorites for more sun and heat-friendly options. Put up your hair, throw on your swimsuit, slather on the sunscreen, and head out for some fun in the sun!

Peace, Love, and Summer Vibes

Jenna
