Hello, hello. Good morning, everybody. All right, it's 11:30, so I'm going to go ahead and get started. Good morning, everybody. I'm Jenna, The Original HMF, and I'm so excited to be here with you guys this morning. And in a few minutes, Jennifer Watson, the Director of Education for Zenagen Hair will be joining us. I just wanted to, while we're waiting for her, share a little bit of my story about how I fell in love with Zenagen.
So, if you haven't followed me for a long time, maybe you're not aware of my hair journey, I'm going to give you the short version of it. If you're interested in learning more about my hair damage and how I've regrown my hair, you can head over to my blog on my website, theoriginalHMF.com and read all about it. There are many postings over there, but the quick version is that I started using hair extensions about three years ago, for the first time, for a special event. I had keratin bond extensions. And when they took them out, my hair was literally this long. So the whole interior portion of my hair was like one-two inches long, it was terrible. So I was just beside myself, heartbroken over what to do. Because as a woman, my hair is very important to me, I get a lot of my confidence from it. Hair has always been my thing, I've always really loved it and enjoyed it and been interested in it. And now I had the majority of my hair this long, which is devastating.
So after a few months of being sad and having to wear extensions, I went ahead and switched hair stylists and the hairstylist that I started with had been on her own hair journey and had hair loss and breakage. I confided in her how upset I was about all this and said, “you know, what did you do? How did you grow your hair back?” And she said, “Zenagen.” And I believed her, and she said, “look it up, see if you can find a bad review, because I couldn't find any bad reviews.” I mean, how many products do you guys all use that have zero bad reviews whatsoever? I can't think of any other ones, and I couldn't find any. So I started using Zenagen. And within three months, I could go without extensions. I had enough hair regrowth that I could go without my extensions. So, I spent the whole summer without them. And at the end of the summer, I had some events and some things, and I wanted my hair longer. So, I went and put my extensions back in. So I went back in and started with a new hair stylist and that hairstylist ended up causing a lot of heat damage or product damage to my hair, and it was all breaking off. And every six weeks, my hair would get shorter and shorter and shorter. And I knew that my hair was growing because I had these dark roots, but it kept breaking off and I did not know what to do.
And last year during quarantine, I was forced to take my extensions out, I couldn't color my hair and I really focused in and use my Zenagen and I'm now able to go without extensions for the first time in three years. So that's a really big thing. I'm really excited about it. This whole thing started in 2018, now it's 2021. And I'm a big believer in Zenagen. I love it so much. And I just want to spread love because I know how devastating and heartbreaking it can be for women to be losing their hair or their hair to be breaking off and not feel like their best selves.
So that's my journey with Zenagen, and Jennifer has joined us so I'm just going to share a little bit about her real quick and then I'll let her start talking. So, after being in the beauty industry for over 10 years as a licensed cosmetologist, Jennifer Watson realized there was an aspect of hair education that more people needed to be informed of. Hair loss and hair acceleration through using Zenagen products gave her that natural, simple solution to these hair challenges that many people encounter. As Director of Education of Zenagen, she uses her skills for this from the salon to educate, inform and encourage others to seek solutions early for hair loss, and be aware of the daily habits that may be causing these issues, which is so important. So without further ado, hello, Jen!
Jennifer Watson:
Hey, Jenna, how are you doing today?
Jenna:
I'm good. How are you? I'm so happy to be here with you.
Jennifer:
Thank you so much. Thanks for having me. And our there was a little technical difficulty with the Zenagen page, so I’m on my personal. But I do want folks to follow our Zenagen Hair page after this to get more updates. But thanks for having me.
Jenna:
Absolutely. I was so fortunate that during the quarantine period last year, I got to take your Monday classes and learn about all the science behind Zenagen, which is - I'm not a science person. It was not my favorite subject in school by a longshot. But you made it so fun, and so interesting, and so informational. And I look forward to our Monday morning classes. So I just am so happy to be able to share you with all of my audience members as well, because it was just so much fun. And I feel like we're quarantine buddies.
Jennifer:
Yeah, thank you, thank you for your support. It was nice to be able to reach out during that time. And there was a lot of hungry folks looking for answers. So yeah, it was a lot of fun. Thank you for your support.
Jenna:
Absolutely. And I think that, unfortunately, the pandemic and hair loss kind of have gone hand in hand. Have you guys seeing a lot of that?
Jennifer:
For sure. Yes, absolutely. Anytime our bodies are disrupted in any way, there's a chance for hair loss to happen for sure. So yes, we've seen a lot of that stress related, COVID-19 related, and then just generalized hair loss that that we're all experiencing at some point or will at some point in our life.
Jenna:
So one of the things that I thought was really interesting when I took your classes is some of the things that cause hair loss that I wouldn't ever have thought of. I've had children, so I've experienced postpartum hair loss. But for the younger generation, there are other things that we don't think of that cause hair loss. One that was really shocking to me was medications. I would never have put that together.
Jennifer:
Oh, yes, absolutely. medications, although we may have to have them to survive, that the space where little follicle is from our top layer of skin into our follicles is tiny, so those little follicles are tiny, we have over 100,000 of them on our head. So any time we consume anything, it's kind of logged in our follicles. That's why and the way I think about it to make it simpler, is that's why they're able to do drug analysis tests from our follicles, that it basically logs everything that happens. So anytime we're consuming medication, although it may be keeping us well, the hair follicle gets a little aggravated with it because it doesn't like to be interrupted in its processes. So yes, medication can build up and oftentimes it's a side effect to most medications - is hair loss.
Jenna:
Wow. And so can the Zenagen products help combat that hair loss, even if you're taking the medication?
Jennifer:
Oh, yes, absolutely. So with Zenagen’s ability to reach the dermal layer, beyond our top layer of skin into where the follicle actually is, we reduce inflammation with all of our botanical plant based ingredients. So, we kind of soothe and calm everything down with that operation of that little mini organ - the follicles like a little mini organ. So we calm it down and cleanse out any impurities and help it function better without having the interruptions of medication deposits on it. So, it does help.
Jenna:
Yeah, that's something that's really important that I think that everybody would like to know about. Because I'm plant based, so I love that your products are vegan, and it's nutraceuticals so you don't have any of those gross chemicals that you have to worry about side effects on, so could you tell us a little bit more about that?
Jennifer:
Sure. It is definitely plant based. So we work with ingredients such as saw palmetto, clover extract, lavender, ginger, sunflower seed oil, so all of these ingredients we're finding more and more information about - plants being able to heal internally and externally. And nutraceutical just means the we take the technology of science with the power of plants and put those two together without the need of any type of chemical compounds. So, it is very much plant based. And I love that for myself as well, I feel better about using a product that's plant based and cruelty free and gluten free and paraben free, for sure. So, any of those concerns that someone may have, it is definitely a safe product, especially in regards to hair loss routines.
Jenna:
Excellent. Yeah, I think that that's really important. Because, you know, a lot of us color our hair, we do keratin treatments. Maybe I know some people use a nioxin base shampoo for hair regrowth. So it's really great that this works well, that Zenagen works well with all of those other things as well.
Jennifer:
Yes, it does pair very well with color services. I'm a licensed cosmetologist, so color was important to me, I spent a lot of time developing the perfect color for my customers. And the last thing I want to do is have something to strip that, right, we don't want that to happen. And you as a customer don't want that either. So we're very much color safe, smoothing treatments safe, any type of keratin treatments, there's nothing in our products that are going to break down those bonds. Also perms, which I know is kind of making a comeback -textured hair is a lot of fun. Yeah, I love that. So yeah, basically anything else you're going to have done to your hair in the salon, this product pairs very well with it for sure.
Jenna:
And hair extension safe because I use it all while I was trying to regrow my hair and camouflage it with hair extensions, and it worked great for me. And I didn't have any issues with the bonds or anything of that nature. So yeah, it's really a wonderful, safe product that I love more than anything, obviously.
Jennifer:
So for sure, yeah, and extensions, I did leave out of that. But absolutely, extensions are a great pair with us. You know, people that are one extensions either want thicker hair, or faster growing hair. So we handle that with both of our categories of Revolve and Evolve. But it is nice pairing with extensions, because it does keep the life of the extensions, which is great, and then improves your existing hair. So it's a really good combination for hair healing and and acceleration.
Jenna:
Excellent. Well, on that note, you know, my issue wasn't necessarily hair loss, it was hair damage. So first I had breakage from improper extension removal, and then once I got my hair grow back, then I had it from heat and color damage. So, now, there's two different product lines that Evolve in the Revolve - I got a lot of questions about this. So would you mind explaining the difference between your two lines?
Jennifer:
Yes, of course. So when our founder and creator Jared Reynolds developed Revolve, it was really just him looking for a solution for himself. And then it kind of opened his mind to ‘Oh, wow, there's all these other people that are losing their hair as well.’ So he got that science under control with Revolve, which is for all things hair loss. So if hair loss is your number one concern, which if you are losing your hair, it should be your number one concern, because it'll only get worse if you don't do anything about it. So Revolve is designed for that, for all things hair loss involved. Whether it's thyroid surgery, stress, medication build up, diet shifts and changes or just hormonal imbalances. So if we're talking about hair loss, we want to stick with Revolve.
Now there's another demographic of people that may not be losing their hair, but maybe they still need some rejuvenation, and they want it to be healed from chemical or heat damage. And they want it to grow faster, because sometimes we get into growth plateau, like we just say, ‘Oh, my hair won't grow past this point.’ And it's usually a result of allergens or stressors as well can kind of stop our growth cycle. And so that's where Evolve came along. So evolve is in green. And that's kind of how I remember it, I think of like growing the grass faster, green. And so evolve is for the customer or the person that wants to grow their hair substantially faster, 40% faster, which is incredible - kind of wake up that growth cycle, but also heal and seal their cuticle And much like you did, like they're kind of in a rehab mode. Maybe their stylist and them are doing everything they can in their power to heal the hair, but it's still not working. And sometimes that just means we need to work from the inside out. So that's the beauty of our products: we do work at from the inside of the follicle all the way out. And so you know there's going to be healing from the get go. So it's really a beneficial product.
So if hair loss is your number one concern, go with revolve first, and try and do two bottles of that, is really our suggestion about six months, no big deal. You're going to shampoo your hair anyway. And then after that, after you've kind of established that framework, so to speak in your follicle to make it nice and strong and healthy, then you can ramp up your growth cycle will Evolve and make it grow much faster with that thicker hair strand you have.
So and then also evolve is great for the person that's a natural shedder, maybe their densities, okay? Like their hair’s intact, but they just shed a ton, which is okay. Some of us shed more than others and Evolve is an excellent product for that as well, because it does reduce the shedding cycle as well.
Jenna:
I've noticed that for sure that it definitely reduces the amount of shedding I have, which everyone in my house appreciates, because they don't love finding my hair all over the place. And actually, my husband has a full head of hair, like he has beautiful hair, and I just want to keep it that way. So I put him on the regime as well. And he might be might have been a little offended by that, but, you know, I figure preventative is best.
Jennifer:
You got it Jenna. And that's exactly right. So the earlier the better. So the first signs of thinking something's off, my scalp is itching, it's hot, I feel different, I'm seeing a lot of shedding, you know, take action, because the earlier the better. If not, it'll just progress for sure. And you know, we all shed at different rates. But we all know our shed, right? So if we tell our hairdresser, I'm shedding more - we know we're shedding more, right?
Jenna:
Yes. And now I've heard that if you have an illness or a trauma or something, the hair loss doesn't necessarily show up right away, it can be like six to eight months after this traumatic event or experience. So then it would be I would think that it would make sense to start your haircare routine before, like, if you know that you're going through something, go ahead and create a preventatively go ahead and get started on keeping your hair from falling out. So is that something that Zenagen can help with as well?
Jennifer:
Oh, goodness, Yes, for sure. Absolutely. So let's say you have a surgery coming up, or you know, you're going to do a job shift or, or you're moving, or you know, maybe you have a medical condition that's just arisen and you're going to have to have treatments or something - yes, you can always started early, just like you handed it over to your husband, even though he has a head full of hair, it's a great insurance plan. So it's going to help keep his hair intact for sure. and improve the texture. So yes, it is often delayed, and that's something we don't really think about, we just live our lives and all of a sudden, ‘oh, my goodness, my hair's falling out.’ Well, we think you know, it's not something we did last Tuesday. It's something that happened to us, you know, three to six months ago. And it just takes time for that to kind of develop. What happens is when we get stressed or something occurs, our hormones get out of whack. Well, it takes a while for that hormone fluctuation to kind of show up in the follicle. So that's why it's delayed often, and it does take time to see that happen. But prevention is always best for sure. Our products are designed to be used three times per week, but even if you use it once a week or twice a week, just for prevention, it's absolutely better than doing nothing at all, for sure.
Jenna:
Definitely, um, so one of my questions that I was asked was, who are these products for? And I think that you've answered – they’re for everyone, because even if you're not experiencing a hair issue where you're trying to regrow your hair or grow your hair longer, you can be preventing future problems with hair loss, because as we age, we're all going to lose hair. Right?
Jennifer:
Right, exactly. And some of us are genetically predisposed to lose hair at some point in the game. Now for a while, we thought genetics was it, it was the only reason we lost hair. But now in the past 10 years, so much research has gone into hair loss, we're now finding out that genetics really just means you have a sensitivity to a hormone called DHT. And we all have that hormone. And some of us are sensitive to it, and some of us are not, just like a food allergy, same thing. And so if we are sensitive to it, then we will begin to lose our hair. And so the great thing about Zenagen is it goes to work internally to reduce the production of that hormone and kind of cleanse it out because DHT kind of builds up like cholesterol in our arteries, it slows everything down. So, yes, the earlier the better. Anyone can use it for sure. It's definitely not going to harm your hair at all. It's only going to work to improve it and make it your best hair for sure.
Jenna:
Yes, absolutely. Another question we had was kind of how it all works, because I've talked a lot about how I have a timer in my shower so that I make sure that it stays on for the full five minutes. So could you go over how often it should be used and the sitting process and all of that as well?
Jennifer:
Yes, absolutely. So, what I recommend is the first thing when you get in the shower, wet you're head just like we would with any other shampoo and go ahead and apply a small amount I use about a dime size when my hair's longer I use a little more, and just get it nice and foamy and apply it all over your scalp. Now we do have scalp massagers, that kind of help exfoliate the skin and get the blood flow going, you don't have to use that. And then we do have these really cool timers. But you can use your phone timer or put a song on, it's just five minutes. So the shampoo does need to sit for five, because what that does is allows our ingredients to penetrate to that dermal layer. So I'm going to use this because it just helps – I’m a visual person, I know I'm kind of nerdy, but it's okay.
So green tea is a cousin of caffeine, that's our delivery system - green tea. We all know green tea, we drink it, we eat it, it's full of antioxidants, and it has an energizing effect to it. So it'll open up this channel, and then all of our nutraceutical ingredients penetrate to the dermal layer. So this is alive that all of this is a working system, and this is very dead, we cut and color it doesn't hurt it’s good to go. This is very alive. And so this is where we need the action to happen. And so the green tea and all those ingredients are going to get in there cleanse out the DHT and reduce that inflammation. And that's happening in that five minutes.
And then we'll rinse our shampoo and then follow up with the conditioner, which is going to help to nourish our existing hair which gets skinny and brittle when we're losing it. And then the conditioner is going to help to nourish the scalp and protect it and aloe is the first ingredient in it. So if we're talking anti-inflammatory aloe is an excellent ingredient for that. And so we're going to nourish that scalp. And these two layers of skin communicate. So if we're working internally and externally with the conditioner, we've really done a great job of preventing that hair loss or treating it at the source. So that's why the five minutes is really important. And then they can just rinse the shampoo, do conditioner, then they're all done. So no big deal that can handle all their other business while the shampoo sitting, we all shampoo till the end of time.
And then it's to be used three times per week. So three times per week is really, if you're just really wanting to get in there and get some results really quickly. I know not all of us shampoo three times per week. So you can still use it on your once or twice a week wash perfectly fine. And then if you're a daily washer, you can use whatever you would like in between. So maybe your stylist has you using a color safe shampoo or a smoothing shampoo, you can use that in between perfectly fine. So it does integrate well with any other products you're using. And it's really simple. And oftentimes if people have anything to say about the five minutes I just say, Hey, if you're losing your hair, something's up so we at least deserve five minutes to breathe in the shower.
Jenna:
Have a little ime in the shower, it's okay. Yeah, it's a little longer, like, my quiet time is in the shower. You know? That's righ, lean into those Zenagen days. So when you're shampooing three times a week with this energy and shampoo, it should be every other day, not three consecutive days. Can you explain why we do it every other day?
Jennifer:
Ideally, yes, it is every other day. And that is because our ingredients work really powerfully for like the first 48 to 72 hours. And then just like anything else that begins to dissipate, then it's time to use Zenagen again. But with that being said, you know, the longer you use our products, the better results you have. Because it does take time to kind of reverse that damaged follicle. So you know, we don't lose our hair overnight, and we're not going to regain it overnight. But it does take time. It's a patience game, but it's worth it. I mean, we're either working to regain our hair or to just continue to lose it. Right. So um, yeah, that's definitely part of that, for sure.
Jenna:
Absolutely. And it's safe to use forever, right? You don't need to take breaks or cycle through it or anything like that.
Jennifer:
Yes, it is safe to use forever if you'd like. When I first started losing my hair due to having a couple surgeries in the same year and a thyroid condition, it all kind of happened at once. And I used it three times per week, like, on it big time. And then now it's been about four years. And so I use it once or twice a week. And I do that just to keep things rolling, but I'm not so stuck on my three times per week anymore, but that's what's worked for me. But it is recommended to use it every other day. So I typically tell people Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and we're in a groove Monday through Friday, and it makes a little easier to remember.
Jenna:
Yep, that's what I do Monday, Wednesday, Friday. That's my routine too, and you could go back and forth between the two. You could like I'm still doing I'm trying to grow my hair still. But my plan is once I get to a good growth length then I'll switch, and I'll get in there first more fullness and thickness because I have pretty fine hair naturally.
Jennifer:
You could do that for sure. So the beauty of Evolve is we do have some of those key ingredients that are in Revolve. So, we have the saw palmetto. We have the red clover extract. So, if you are switching back and forth, or if you're just using Evolve alone, you can know that there's still some ingredients in there working to reduce that inflammation and DHT. So, that's good to go. You can flip flop back and forth. If hair loss is your number one concern you want to do those two bottles of Revolve first just it's like a foundation on a home, get everything in working order, then ramp up that growth cycle. But yes, you can flip flop.
Jenna:
That's what I personally did last year during the quarantine was I went ahead and did three months of the revolt because those bottles are showing they look small, but they last you three months to 90 days supply. And at the end of the 90 days, you really see a difference. So I spent 90 days trying to get my hair really healthy and make sure it wasn't shedding, especially during that COVID period where we were all so stressed out. And then I went back to my Evolve for length after that three months.
Jennifer:
Nice. Yeah. So at that point you can you know your hair better than anybody. So you can kind of, you know, gauge what you may need or not need in that week or that day for sure.
Jenna:
Absolutely. So as far as the conditioner goes - now I know you don't have to leave it on for the full five minutes, you can do 30 to 60 seconds with the conditioner, or what do you recommend?
Jennifer:
Oh, for sure. So just the shampoo is required for the five minutes. And that is because it takes that amount of time for everything to get to work, essentially. The conditioner, I usually say 30 to 60 seconds just allow it to do something you know, you don't have to count it out or overthink it, just put it on for a minute and remember it has a little bit of work to do itself, so give it just a minute and then rinse it out. And the conditioner does need to be applied to the scalp. It does finish off the treatment is really important part of it, it has SPF 15 in it. So if you're if you're losing your hair, that sun exposure is going to be increased. And it makes your hair feel wonderful. It definitely plumps it up and makes the texture feel amazing. If you want to use a favorite mask or something like that, you feel like it's a day that your hair is extra thirsty, you can absolutely use that mid to ends. Or when my hair's longer, I've even used our conditioner, rinsed it and used another one on top, no big deal.
So Zenagen is designed for all hair types. But it's specifically formulated for fine and thin. So there's no heavy heaviness to it, it's not going to weigh your hair down or anything, it's going to give a nice light airy kind of movement to it. Which is nice because when you're thinning your hair just kind of stays, it doesn't really move. So the conditioner is vital. And I notice, a lot of people ask, ‘can I use the shampoo, And then use my favorite conditioner and replace once in a while? ‘For sure. Yes, you can. So the conditioner is 20% of the treatment benefits and it's important. But maybe you're using like a blonding conditioner, or something like that, you can absolutely use that as well. It's okay, if you miss it once or twice, just I wouldn't get in the habit of it.
Jenna:
That was a conversation at my house with a family member that I purchased the shampoo and conditioner for that did not believe me that it was 20% of the process, in the conditioner, and that their friend told them that they could use any conditioner they wanted. And so I appreciate you clarifying that for me.
Jennifer:
Absolutely. Yeah.
You know, sometimes we just make up our own rules, but it's okay, you know, whatever works for the conditioner is 20% of the treatment benefits, it is important, it kind of finishes the treatment off because we have to treat, to be effective, I feel like we have to treat internally, externally on the scalp and then external on the hair. So it's kind of a, you know, all of those together. Absolutely.
Jenna:
I love the SPF in it as well. Because even if you're not thinning or looking for length, you still may wear your hair in a ponytail when you're outside, and I live in South Florida, so I'm always worried about my scalp being sunburned, and I love that I have that added layer of protection so that I don't have to be super concerned about it.
Jennifer:
Absolutely and protecting your color from the rays as well, because when the hotter it gets atmospherically, it kind of opens our cuticle off, causes dryness, and then the sun's gonna get right to it and fade our color out. So it is a nice, nice benefit for that as well.
Jenna:
So one of the things that I haven't talked much about on any of my platforms is the Boost line, but I do use the Boost line and love it. So could you share a couple of those products with us as well?
Jennifer:
Yes, of course. Yeah. They're kind of the forgotten stars, I think you know, we get all excited about the shampoo and conditioner and then we forget ‘Oh yeah, we have these cool stylers too.’ So yeah, Boost was created. There's four products in the Boost family. There's a volume foam, cream, this scalp therapy spray which can be used as a third step if someone really wants to get on their game with it, or just like a spot treatment, and then the thickening powder. So these were all designed to kind of support the fine and thin hair. But they're designed for all hair types to I have thick haired folks that love it just as well. A lot of the ingredients that are in our shampoo are also in these products. So we have coconut oil, we have Saw Palmetto, green tea, aloe, lavender, Grapeseed extract, so really good ingredients. And what they're going to work to do is to plump up the hair and protect it, there is a little bit of heat protection in the cream. And just allow for a light airy style to it. But it's also cool because not only do you get to treat your hair with the shampoo and conditioner, but then this is almost like a treatment in itself with the ingredients and how they kind of hug the hair and support and treat the hair all throughout the styling process as well. So I do love them for that. The foam gives an excellent blowout, especially with the cream, I have a lot of curly gals that love this combo. And I do myself so I use the cream in my hair when it's shorter. And then the powder is a water based powder. So it's a lot of fun. It's like a velvety silky texture.
Jenna:
Yes, I use like right in here to get around height.
Jennifer:
Yes, and I love it for folks that are thin on the sides that where their hair flattens out, it kind of gives a little boost that way. So that's good.
Now this one, I want to talk about this one for a minute, the scalp therapy. This is the only one with this spray nozzle. So you just shake it a bit and spray it on your areas of concern. So maybe someone just really wants to get on board with their hair loss, or they're used to maybe using a third step from another routine, and they like the idea of a third step, they can do that. This can also be used in between your shampoo days. So let's say you're the person that only shampoos once a week, but you still feel like you want to get some benefits on your scalp, you can spray it on your areas of concern in between your shampoo days. And you just spray it right on the scalp, massage it in, and then carry on with your day. So it's not going to interrupt your style, you're not having to re-shampoo and you're still getting some of those follicle, anti-inflammatory benefits.
Jenna:
I did not know that I was only using on shampoo days. So that's like amazing information. I'm so excited because I'm sure as you know, both as a blonde and as a hairstylist, this front portion of your hair just takes a beating like that money piece. And it's always it always gets color no matter what, sometimes you can kind of do a partial or whatever. And that's where the breakage always occurs. So that's my go to spot with that treatment is to just get in there especially is right on this side.
Jennifer:
For sure. Yes, absolutely.
Jenna:
I like I like doing something to help with my hair growth every single day. So I am going to go ahead and start with that one on the days that I'm not shampooing. So that's great news.
Jennifer:
Awesome. Yes, they're good products and they're nice to play around with. And it's good because there's a lot of stylers out there that are just kind of fillers, almost so to speak, they're filled with alcohol, they kind of give an immediate gratification, but they're not really nourishing the hair. And that's what I love about boost is it is truly like nourishing the hair at the same time that it's supporting the volumized style.
Jenna:
I think that something that's worth noting with the Boost is a lot of the time when you use styling products, you kind of get back like crunchy gross feeling in your hair, I don't have that with the boost products at all. And that's really nice when you're not washing your hair every single day.
Jennifer:
Absolutely, yes. And can reapply like when my hair is longer, I do use these products like daily to refresh. I never feel like I get a buildup. They're nice to just come right through if you just kind of want to refresh and start over the next morning without a shampoo. There's not a lot of fillers or additives in it to make them sticky or tacky or heavy. No, it's a really good ingredient profile for sure. And, they do have some memory to them. So the powder has little memory. So you know, humidity and things naturally kind of bring our styles down throughout the day and we can just fluff it right back up and it brings it right back where it was. So it is a nice benefit.
Jenna:
Absolutely. Um, I'm was going to go through and see if we have any questions that we needed to answer.
Oh, I had hair loss from having COVID too. Fortunately, I did not have COVID. But I know the stress of COVID was a lot for a lot of people and that definitely affected their hair and their hair growth. So have you had any experience with anyone who's had COVID and had hair loss from COVID and what the benefits they seen from using Zenagen?
Jennifer:
Oh, for sure, yes. And I get calls pretty frequently, and they've kind of dissipated at this point. But this was maybe three or four months ago where people were calling and saying, ‘I'm losing my hair Why?’ And, and it was COVID related just because your body's fighting off something, so it's going to use all of its energy to help you stay well. You know, the hair follicle gets kind of thrown to the side, because it's not essential tissue, right. So our body systems are kind of like, ‘Oh, we don't need that we're gonna work on something else.’ So um, COVID does affect your systems. And we what I've gotten a lot of just straight up breaking off, also a lot of shedding and density changes. So they're just, you know, losing a lot like and gobs. And so what we've found is using those Zenagen treatments, it's bringing it back much more rapidly, and a lot stronger, and a lot more manageable and less shedding. And I've heard, which I experienced this myself, when I lost my hair. scalps are very irritated and itchy and hot, and I'm squishy, or boggy, squishy is less of technical term like it. But we can all relate to the word squishy. So um, yeah, but it definitely does help to restore the health of the follicle. So basically, the body's gone through some things, and there's going to be some inflammation set up in there, because there's aggravation in the follicle. And then of course, our lovely ingredients are going to get in there to reduce that reduce the breakage and bring that hair back much quicker, much thicker for sure and reduce shedding.
Jenna:
And the thing that's really important about that is how natural the product is, that you don't have to worry about that when you now that you've gone through this serious health issue, you don't have to worry about putting more chemicals or bad things into your body. So I think that's really important, like a really important thing that I want everybody to know. And, you know, I feel like, hair is important to a lot of people. This is a big deal for a lot of people. And this is a really good option for them. I know that we talked in the classes that I took a lot about postpartum and post chemotherapy treatment, after chemotherapy treatments. If you’ve ever been through, whether it's a new baby or recovering from cancer, it's safe. So could you speak to that and maybe ease people's minds a little bit about how safe it is to use during those vulnerable time periods?
Jennifer:
Oh, absolutely, of course. So you know, our founder, Jared Reynolds started his journey, doing cancer research. So that was like, what he wanted to get into ultimately with his career and med school. And then he started losing his hair. And then he sought the solution. So he did his research, he's a biochemist and molecular biologist, and put the ingredient components together that he felt would work best through his research. And so, with that being said, you know, cancer is, is important as far as education goes with him and safety. He's really passionate about that - that was his first medical love was learning about how to cure that. And so, yes, the ingredients are absolutely safe for it. It's so nourishing for the scalp of someone who's experiencing chemotherapy treatments often have, they lose their hair very rapidly. And that is because that follicle kind of shuts down and says I can't make hair in this toxic environment. And our products are really suggested to be used 30 to 60 days post-chemo, and they can use it during, usually doctors have a pretty strict regimen because they don't want anything to change, they want to kind of keep a better idea of what's going on in the body. So 30 to 60 days post chemo, your body's beginning to flush that drug out. And then it'll allow time and opportunity for our molecules to get in there and bring that follicle back to life. So that's why sometimes when people have chemotherapy, their hair comes back, oftentimes kind of funky, it comes back kind of wirey it may come back with texture that they didn't have before or pigment that they didn't have before. And that's because that follicle’s waking back up and trying to figure out how to operate again. And so the beauty about Zenagen is it gets in there and brings that follicle back to life. The patient or the customers hair is going to come back much quicker, much thicker. And then the conditioner is definitely nourishing for their scalp which is often thin the skin gets thin, and it's super sensitive, and so the conditioner goes in there to bring that scalp back to life as well. So it is safe and we recommend 30 to 60 days post chemo. Now, if we're talking about postpartum, it's completely safe to be used during pregnancy, during nursing. None of these ingredients are hitting the bloodstream. And I've seen as young as a three-year-old use our products or alopecia areata. Oh, yeah, for sure, all the way up. So it is definitely completely safe. And I would highly suggest it.
Jenna:
That's incredible. You know I wish I had known about it during my pregnancies, I would have been using it the whole time. The first time I had like, mega great hair, and then the second time I had the limp hair because of the hormones. And DHT I feel like is the big word you need to remember when it comes to hair loss, that you’re trying to eliminate the DHT and I don’t think a lot of people know about that. So it’s really great that you guys educate on that so so much.
So let’s see, we have another question: How are you guys so successful at doing it three days per week? Do you have a schedule?
Ok well I’m a little neurotic, so that’s why I don’t have a problem doing it three days per week. I’m neurotic about my hair and I want my hair to grow and it’s really important to me and I stick with what you said – I do it Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and sometimes it runs over to Saturday but if it does I feel like, okay I got an extra day and then I get back on track on Monday. And I think consistency is key. I will say that the first time I used the shampoo I did notice a difference. My hair did feel fuller, and it felt softer and just healthier overall. Just from one shampoo. That’s the nutraceuticals working.
Jennifer:
Absolutely. You will see results in one shampoo as far as how your existing hair feels and styles and manageability and the shedding will begin to reduce definitely throughout that time. It takes a minute to get into the habit of it, but you learn ‘oh yeah, that’s supposed to sit’ or ‘what day is it’ and how all that happens but, don’t fret. If you forget today, you can use it tomorrow, no big deal. And once you do get into the habit, speaking to the followers here, you’ll put everything on your scalp for five minutes, that’s what I do now. When I’m just using a regular shampoo I have to stop myself and be like, ‘oh I can rinse this off now, it’s not a Zenagen day.’ So it does take a minute to get into the habit but once you’re there, you’re there. And I think the biggest thing is that once you begin to see results, the habit really comes, like ‘oh, this is really working, I’m going to stick with it’ kind of thing.
Jenna:
Yeah you definitely get motivated once you start to see it happen. And I mean I even saw it when I would go to my stylist and they’d be like ‘how is your hair growing so fast?’ and I’m like ‘it’s my Zenagen shampoo, that’s how it’s growing so fast.’ And I had hair stylists who were shocked at how well it worked. I tell everybody because I’ve been there. I know how bad it stinks when you feel like your hair isn’t reaching its full potential. And I just want to help everybody else who might be feeling that way too because it’s not a really fun predicament to be in.
Jennifer:
No, it’s not, and I love that about you. I’m glad that you’re reaching out about your story and sharing it with others. We need more of that for sure, and that’s my goal personally in alignment with Zenagen, we just need to talk about hair loss more. Because it used to be such a hush hush thing and people used to cover up their hair a lot with wigs and pieces and things like that and a lot of people are finding more options to find options and get results without having to do all that. So it is really nice and it does affect our wellbeing, it really does, when we’re losing our hair. So, it’s been a great solution for myself and a lot of our customers because it’s so easy – we’re shampooing anyway and it’s botanical, and it works.
Jenna:
Yeah especially as women, I feel like it’s embarrassing for us to admit that our hair is falling out or it’s breaking off or whatever it is. For men it’s a little bit more socially acceptable to be going bald. They don’t want to do it, they don’t like it, so that’s why you have the men’s like, but for women, it’s really a confidence thing. Your hair is the crown that you never take off. So I think that’s really important and what you guys are doing is amazing.
I think that’s something that we didn’t cover – with the Revolve line there’s a men’s shampoo and a women’s shampoo, and the conditioner is unisex. So can you explain why there’s a men’s and a women’s and why you should not use the opposite?
Jennifer:
Absolutely, so the packaging is similar, you can see it says ‘men’s’ or ‘women’s’ on there. There is a difference because our bodies react differently to hair loss. Our hormonal compositions are a little different, even though both male and female have testosterone, we both make DHT, which we talked about and is that nasty hormone we don’t want too much of in our follicle. Men produce more DHT, because they naturally have more testosterone, and DHT is made from that. So saw palmetto, which is a low-lying palm which grows in tropical areas, is really excellent for that DHT prohibitor. It inhibits the production of it. So there is a higher concentration of saw palmetto in the men’s, but neither one is stronger than the other. They’re just specifically for our chemistry, our hormonal makeup. The women’s has more of the red clover extract, so it’s just extracted the piece of the plant that’s going to get to business when it comes to the DHT and inflammation. 70% of hair loss is hormone-related, and men have that DHT hormone. Women have hormone fluctuations. We have them monthly, and have them once we hit pre-menopause at age 35, everything’s going everywhere. Our hormones are up one day, maybe down, it depends on our lifestyle, our genetics, and all of that. So, the women’s helps to kind of foster that. Now the reason for hormonal loss is because our hormones protect our follicles. The way I explain this so that it makes sense to people is most of the time, when gals are pregnant, they get extra thick and shiny hair, like you said with your first child. That’s because of that extra surge of hormones. If there’s more hormones, there’s more protection, so there’s healthier hair. So the clover extract for the women’s gets in there and adds that protection since our hormones are fluctuating. So that’s the difference and why men need to use the men’s and women need to use the women’s, unless you’re transitioning, but other than that yeah, that’s the designation for that. And then the conditioner is unisex, and you can flip flop your conditioners. So I do have some folks that love the Evolve and then really love the Revolve conditioner, so that’s okay, that’s fine, you’re still getting added benefits.
Jenna:
Excellent, well that’s good to know! That’s something I didn’t know either.
Jennifer:
Yeah! You can try that out.
Jenna:
That’s awesome news, I love that. Ok so I have one more question for you and it kind of speaks more to your background as a hair stylist but I want to ask if going dark in conjunction with the Zenagen would help. So, I’m assuming they mean coloring their hair darker or going back to their natural hair color, so do you have any advice for someone who is considering going back dark?
Jennifer:
Sure! If they mean that they’ve been bleaching their hair a lot and they want to put pigment back in it to make it healthier, that would be a yes. I would give a yes to that. But as far as a color shift I’m not really sure what their color story is, but if they want to reach out to their hairdresser, there are ways that you can cut and color hair to make it appear thicker and fuller, for sure. And it could be about color blocking, putting light against dark to get that contrast. But maybe they’re speaking about adding pigment into their hair to kind of heal as they thicken it, and I would agree with that. Yes, if you’re like a bright blonde and you’re getting thin, maybe it’s the same color as your scalp – I’ve experienced that myself where the hair kind of blends in with the scalp, adding a little bit of tone to that will help it appear a little bit thicker and fuller. There definitely are some tricks in the bag with that, for sure.
Jenna:
Yeah and when you add color in, you’re adding to the hair strand. You’re filling in the cuticle rather than pulling from it when you bleach. So that in itself is going to help your hair. But, I think it’s important to note that if you are blonde, or you do color your hair lighter, and you like your hair lighter, Zenagen is going to be able to keep your hair healthy and growing or regrowing. So, yes, coloring or darkening your hair is going to be a benefit but it’s not a necessity when you’re using the Zenagen products.
Jennifer:
You’re right, exactly, and that’s a good point that Zenagen is going to help support that hair that’s needing some love as you’re healing and getting that thickness back. So using great products in conjunction with all of that definitely is a big helper.
Jenna:
Absolutely. Well, I think that’s it for questions! Do you have anything else that you want to share with us today?
Jennifer:
Well, I just know that we’re working really hard to develop some new products, so we’ll hopefully be able to announce that in the near future so keep your eyes and ears open for that. And we’re here to support the thinning community and folks who want to grow their hair much faster and an accelerated rate, there really is nothing else on the market and that’s what drew me to the brand – just the technology and the plant-based technology there. So yeah it’s a really good benefit for sure.
Jenna:
Excellent. And you guys did just come out with duos as well. And I know that some of them are sold out – I think I got an email saying that something was back in stock so, do you want to go ahead and give the Zenagen website information so that all of these lovely followers can go check it out?
Jennifer:
Sure. our Instagram is @zenagenhair, and then our website is just zenagen.com.
Jenna:
And you guys have been sweet enough to provide me and all of my followers and audience members with the code Jenna20 so that they can get 20% off their Zenagen experience so, if you need a little motivation and incentive, here it is today! You’ve learned from the best, and you have a 20% discount so, what are you waiting for, right?
Jennifer:
That’s awesome! And yeah the products all last 90 days and sometimes longer, so it’s nice to just put it in the shower and not have to worry about a re-purchase for 3-4 months!
Jenna:
Exactly. Especially if you only wash your hair 2-3 times a week, you’re good to go, you don’t have to worry about investing in any other shampoos during that time period.
